Rare "Carrera" Modular Sofa by De Pas, D'Urbino and Lomazzi, Italy 1972

$60,000.00

An exceptional vintage “Carrera” modular sofa designed by Jonathan De Pas, Donato D’Urbino and Paolo Lomazzi for BBB Bonacina, Italy. Originally conceived in 1969 and produced circa 1972, the Carrera is a striking and increasingly rare example of Italian Radical Design.

Composed of five modular elements, the sofa is defined by its sculptural, generously padded forms and distinctive curving silhouette. Each section features a fully upholstered polyurethane foam structure, with deeply articulated seats and backrests creating the characteristic rhythmic profile of the Carrera. The rounded corner elements further emphasize the fluid, almost architectural quality of the design.

Characteristic of the work of De Pas, D’Urbino and Lomazzi during this period, the Carrera combines the experimentation and visual impact of late 1960s and early 1970s Italian design with remarkable functionality. Its individual components can be configured in a variety of arrangements, allowing the sofa to adapt to different interiors while retaining its dramatic sculptural presence.

This five-piece example has been comprehensively restored to an exceptional standard using the highest quality materials, while carefully preserving the proportions and character of the original design.

A phenomenal statement piece and an important example of 20th-century Italian design, the Carrera sits at the intersection of furniture, architecture and sculpture.

Italy, circa 1972.
